Melissa Albert’s book was a hot title at the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair.
Columbia Pictures has preemptively picked up the movie rights to The Hazel Wood, a buzzy YA fantasy book written by Melissa Albert.
Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher, who adapted the Divergent books for Summit/Lionsgate, will produce the Wood adaptation.
The story centers on a teenaged girl who lives with her mom, who has forbidden her any contact with her grandmother, once an author of black fairy tales, Tales From the Hinterland. When her mother is kidnapped, the girl discovers that the Hinterland is not a fantasy and that she must journey into that supernatural world to save her.
The book has been described as having shades of Pan’s Labyrinth and Snow White and was a hot title coming out of the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair. Flatiron Books will publish on Jan. 30, 2018, and publishing deals have already closed in 13 foreign territories.
Lauren Abrahams will oversee for Columbia Pictures.
Albert is repped by UTA and The Book Group.
